OOC: Personality & History for Teyla Emmagan [In progress]
Personality: Teyla is the leader of her people, the Athosians, and thus carries a strong sense of duty- both toward them and to her team on Atlantis. She takes her responsibilities toward her people and her team very seriously, and believes that, as a member of John Sheppard's team, the Atlanteans should trust her enough to carry her weight and be able to participate in any missions, plans, and schemes for the good of Atlantis. This leads her to become rightfully frustrated when others view her with suspicion and treat her as an outsider, despite the fact that she has proven her worth and trustworthiness a thousand times over, and later on when her friends try to leave her out of missions for her own safety during her pregnancy and later on when she has a baby to look after. Teyla considers herself more than capable of balacing motherhood and duty, however.
Teyla is used to being a representative for her people, and thus has exceptional skill at making friendly connections with strangers from all walks of life. More often than not, she ends up in the roles of negotiator and peacemaker when her more hot-headed male comrades fail to make a good impression. She is good at soothing hurt feelings and calming panicked people, and seems able to earn others' trust very easily. Being someone who was forced from her homeland and who has lost many people that she loves, Teyla also shows a great deal of sympathy toward orphans and others who were driven from their homes during the war with the Wraith.
However, she is not without her moments of insecurity and weakness. In her determination to prove herself worthy of the team and win victories against the Wraith, Teyla can overtax herself and put herself in dangerous situations that can lead to her mind becoming overwhelmed or nearly taken over. Her sympathy and compassion can easily be taken advantage of by others, as well. She also sometimes doubts her ability to lead and to be a good friend, teammate and mother. Teyla also often feels torn between the Athosians and Atlantis; while she loves her people, wants to be there for them, and regrets missing out on so much happening in their lives, she feels that she is doing much more good as a member of the Atlantis expedition, taking an active stand against the Wraith.
Abilities/Skills: Teyla is exceptionally skilled in many forms of combat. She has shown proficiency with guns, knives, and staves, and is more than capable of holding her own while unarmed.
Teyla also has the gift of being able to sense nearby Wraith and tap into their hive mind due to the bit of Wraith DNA in her system. However, attempting to do the latter is risky, as a strong-willed Wraith could take over her mind and force her to attack her friends or reveal private information.
