Fanfic: "Future", Simon/Kaylee, G
Title: Future
Author:
shurimon
Fandom: Firefly
Pairing: Simon Tam/Kaylee Frye
Rating: G
Summary: Spoilers for the entire series and movie. A glimpse into the future. The idea that Simon and Kaylee eventually marry, settle on Ariel and have twins was taken from the Still Flying companion book.
Disclaimer: I do not own Firefly or the characters. I make no profit off of this story.
Rain drummed against the windshield, making the streetlights into blurs as Simon drove home after a long day. It was close to midnight, and the streets of Ariel became more and more deserted the further he went. He was tired, but it was a good sort of tired- the kind that made him appreciate being a free man even more than usual. The kind that meant that he'd been in surgery all day instead of being stuck within the confines of a spaceship, pulling out bullets and stitching up knife wounds whenever trouble found the crew, trying his best to heal his sister's broken mind with the few tools he had, feeling useless much of the rest of the time. The kind that meant he didn't always have to look over his shoulder when out in public, avert his face from people who might recognize him and turn him in. The kind of tired that was eased a little when he remembered that he had a beautiful house and a wife that loved him to come home to.
The rain had ceased by the time Simon pulled into his driveway. As usual, one of the doors to his and Kaylee's spacious garage was open, and various car and engine parts and tools were scattered everywhere. Simon grimaced; his wife often teased him for wanting everything to be neat and orderly, but when he couldn't even pull into his own garage due to the debris from her own little projects...
He then laughed a little to himself and shook his head.
"And the fact that I have the luxury of being able to be worried by this says a lot," he told himself, getting out and noticing that the hammock in one corner was full. Kaylee had strung it up to make the place feel a little like her old home on Serenity, and often ended up napping and even spending warm nights out there when she got too engrossed in things. He approached it and grinned when he saw, not the person he was expecting, but the top of a head of unruly brown hair and a bare foot sticking out. Simon tiptoed forward and leaned in to kiss the young woman inside on the forehead and stroke her cheek. River murmured sleepily in return and opened one brown eye to look at him.
"Hey, meimei. Did you come to keep them company today?" he whispered, and River yawned, nodding.
"They're getting louder and louder every week. Probably anxious to meet you." Simon laughed again and began helping his groggy sister out of the hammock.
"Almost as anxious as I am to meet them, no doubt." River mumbled again and leaned against her brother, slipping one hand inside his. Simon squeezed it hard, reaching his other hand over to run it through her hair. Simon closed the garage door, and the two siblings went inside, down the hall to the guest room- though Simon figured he may as well have called it River's room, considering how often she slept there. He tucked her in, as he had many times before, even though she was now grown and becoming more and more stable in mind the more time passed. She still needed her brother's presence sometimes, and he hers- after all they had been through, it was understandable.
Kaylee understood. It was one of the reasons Simon felt blessed to be married to her.
"I love you, meimei," he whispered in the dark, kissing her forehead again. River snuggled into the covers.
"Love you too, Simon."
When she had fallen back asleep, Simon started toward his bedroom and Kaylee, then hesitated, first going to the kitchen and taking something from the refrigerator. Balancing the small bowl in his hand, Simon opened his bedroom door as softly as he could and peeked in. His wife lay on her side on their bed, her breathing slow and steady as she slept. Simon stopped to watch her for a while before setting the bowl down on the nightstand next to her, changing into pajamas. He then slipped in beside Kaylee and wrapped his arms around her, feeling warmth crawling into his heart, as it still did every time he saw her. She turned over onto her back, kissed his nose and opened her eyes.
"Hello, sunshine," he whispered. "Busy today?"
"Mmmm," she replied, nodding. "The usual. Every time I think I've seen it all, someone comes in with their ship so screwed up beyond recognition you wonder how they managed to fly their piece of junk into the shop. Nothing I can't handle, though it tires me out quick nowadays..."
"Understandable." Simon held her close. "Sorry for the late night myself; had a surgery that ran over. Did my sister behave herself? She was asleep in the garage when I got home. I hope she wasn't a bother..."
"Shoot, no. I keep telling you not to worry about that none. She helps take care of things around the house when I'm all wiped out."
"Except the garage," Simon teased.
"Believe it or not, that IS clean," Kaylee teased back, reaching over and taking a strawberry from the bowl Simon had brought her, biting down with relish. "I AM buildin' a new car, darling. And about a dozen other things."
"Just don't overexert yourself." Simon allowed his hands to roam down her body, resting on the telltale bulge over her belly. "After all, since I am incapable of doing anything halfway, I managed to give you twice the amount of baby we planned for." Kaylee poked him hard on the nose.
"And I keep tellin' you to not worry about THAT, either. Was just as much my doin' as yours. We had our time alone to enjoy ourselves after we got married, then we started talking about havin' a baby. Just means we'll have twice as much to love."
"Mmm." Simon buried his face in her hair, sighing happily. "River says they're getting louder. I can't wait."
"You're going to be a great daddy," Kaylee affirmed, chomping on another strawberry. "Just us, and our kids... it'll be real nice..."
"And in the meantime, I will keep a steady supply of strawberries and strawberry-flavored things within reach. I'm happy for that; you could have had far worse cravings."
"Dork." The two shared a deep kiss before she snuggled into him. She was soon asleep again. Simon began to stroke her hair, reflecting on her comment that he would be a good dad. While he was touched, this was certainly something of a bittersweet time for him; even after he was cleared of any wrongdoing, his parents had maintained their distance, and he and River had had long discussions about the matter and ultimately chosen to keep theirs as well. That meant River was the only family he had left to celebrate milestones with, including his wedding. Kaylee's family had welcomed the siblings with open hearts and arms, which helped, but Simon had to admit to himself that it still hurt a little to know that his parents would never know their only grandchildren, would never know their daughter-in-law... would even consider her to be beneath him.
And if that's the case, you don't WANT to be around them again, he told himself for the thousandth time. No matter how much it hurts. You've built a pretty good life for yourself and have a lot to be thankful for.
He held Kaylee- and his little boy and girl, still inside of her- smelled her scents, motor oil and strawberries and a thousand other things he couldn't really pin down- and mentally let go of his parents for now.
What was most important to him, what he had fought for and risked his life and future for, was right here in this house.
"And it's all worth it," he murmured into Kaylee's hair, finally closing his eyes and going to sleep.
