CHARACTER NAME: Alphonse Elric
CHARACTER AGE: 17
SERIES: Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
CHRONOLOGY: At the end of the series as he leaves to go to Xing
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: Randomly with roommates, and I am open to him living outside Heropa
BACKGROUND: Wiki link
PERSONALITY: Alphonse Elric is a sweet, caring and kind boy who is often presented as the calmer foil to his more hotheaded older brother Edward. He'll stop to help anyone or anything in need of it and is kind to all living things, including animals, to the point where Edward sometimes has to scold him for trying to keep stray kittens he finds on their journey. Though he and Ed find themselves in combat situations a lot, Al tries to cause minimal destruction and would rather show mercy to an opponent than kill or seriously harm them. Indeed, he dislikes unnecessary bloodshed overall and is disturbed when his country's military shows a tendency toward solving conflicts by force rather than negotiation or taking prisoners. Al generally has a slow fuse, is patient, and is hard to anger, and thus tends to find himself playing the role of peacemaker and keeping a level head when others are arguing and disagreeing around him. He tends to be polite to everyone he meets, as well, and is often the one to remind his brother to mind his manners and say thank you or show gratitude.
Al's most important relationship in life is with his older brother Edward. He understands and appreciates the sacrifices Ed made to keep him tied to their world and help Al recover his flesh and blood body. The two have been through a lot of hardship and love and trust one another completely. They are seldom seen apart, and though they have their squabbles sometimes, Al also jokes with and teases his brother. He often takes a caretaker role toward Ed, making sure his brother takes time to rest, sleep, eat, and take care of his injuries. When they were younger, Ed sometimes had to cajole or threaten Al into doing things for him, but as they get older, they treat each other with respect and give each others' feelings and opinions equal weight and consideration. The two of them tend to be on the same wavelength and have the same kinds of ideas and work very well together as a team, whether they're in battle, trying to solve a problem, or deciding what their next course of action will be. Al sometimes has to intervene when Ed's anger gets the better of him in order to stop bad situations from escalating further. Ed dying or leaving him is his worst fear, and when it seems as though Ed has been lost at one point, Al is paralyzed with grief and fear for quite a while before he is able to snap himself out of it and take action to try and rescue him.
Al also cares deeply about the other people he sees as family- like his childhood friend Winry and her grandmother Pinako, as well as his teacher Izumi- and his friends in the military. Because his father left and his mother died at a young age, part of Al seeks the warmth and security of a family, and it bothers him when families don't get along. After several people he was attached to are hurt or killed before his eyes, Al gains a strong sense of wanting to protect and save his loved ones. He sees their deaths and his inability to stop them as a weakness he must overcome, and as time goes on, he becomes more and more involved in protecting others with his body and his alchemy skills. However, this attachment to people can still prove to be a weakness, such as when Wrath makes Winry a hostage against his and Ed's cooperation with the enemy's plans, as Al knows that harm coming to her because of him would devastate him. The events of the series were even kicked off by Al's strong attachment to his mother, as wanting to revive her after her death led to the doomed attempt at human transmutation that set him and Ed on their path.
Al is extremely intelligent and knows the importance of working hard, and yet he also understands the value of rest and play. He has been known to pause in his and Ed's studies in order to play with a young child or have a friendly chat with one of their comrades. Despite this, he and Ed still take opportunities to learn or study new things when they can. Al shows a particularly keen interest in alkahestry (a form of alchemy from the Eastern country of Xing), because it originated for medicinal purposes rather than military ones, as it did in his home country of Amestris. Because his teacher Izumi drilled into him the importance of keeping a healthy body as well as a healthy mind, he tries to keep his reaction times and weapons and martial arts skills sharp. He is big on being self-reliant as much as possible and makes sure to take the time to fix the damage he causes and give back to the people who have helped him when he can.
Overall, Al is a kind and gifted young man who will do what it takes to protect those around him.
POWER: Alchemy: This is his only canon ability. Al is a master of alchemy, the art of deconstructing and reconstructing matter into new forms. These transmutations are powered by the energy generated by the movement of Earth’s crust. Alchemy is rooted in the principle of equivalent exchange- to obtain, something of equal value must be lost- and thus it can’t be used to create something from nothing. Alchemy must also follow the laws of chemistry- for example, if Alphonse transmutes something made from water, he can only change it into something that shares the properties of water. But he could also change carbon into something as brittle as pencil lead or as strong as diamond. In canon, he mostly uses alchemy to create barriers and weapons, though he is also capable of repairing any destruction he and Edward cause.
Healing: I’d also like to give Al the ability to heal injuries. This ability would require him to make physical contact with the subject, and clap his hands to activate it like he does his alchemy. He would be limited to healing sprains, stopping bleeding, and fixing broken bones at most; he would not be able to perform surgery or cure complex internal injuries such as paralysis.
〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE: It seems like the riots have calmed down for the time being. If any of you have minor injuries and haven’t been able to see a doctor, I would be happy to use my new healing ability on you. I can also use my alchemy to repair any structural damage to your homes or businesses. Hopefully, people won’t get the idea to try again, but I’d be happy to reinforce your buildings if you’re wary.
After seeing this happen, though, it’s made me curious- I only got here a few days ago. Do the natives of this world usually have a bad opinion of us? Because if so... I’d like to do what I can to help change that perception.
LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE: It’s been a long day; the riots in Maurtia Falls had gotten out of control, and though Alphonse had just arrived, he’d immediately put himself to work. His alchemy was handy to corral and restrain angry protestors in order for the police to take care of them, and to protect any innocents who had gotten in the crossfire. He knows that this isn’t likely to endear imPorts to the native population, but his purpose was to stop the destruction from engulfing the whole city. They can work on relations when things have calmed down.
Heaving a sigh, he takes the time to catch a breather when he can, settling down in a chair and accepting a cold bottle of water someone thrusts at him. Finishing half of it in a few gulps, he wipes his forehead and sips the rest of the water, watching as natives and imPorts alike carefully assess the damage, talk, argue. He smiles to himself; I can’t stay out of trouble no matter which world I end up in, he thinks ruefully. But that wasn’t going to stop him from helping. His teacher would be furious if he’d just sat on his hands, and even the thought of her is enough to steel his resolve.
A mewing noise then catches his attention. Al peeks under his chair, grinning and coaxing a tabby cat from underneath it. The thing is obviously a stray, skinny and uncombed, but it’s friendly, sniffing his fingers then rubbing against his hand.
“I guess we’re both a little lost,” he remarks to the cat, scooping it up. “But I’ll help you find a home with me here.”
FINAL NOTES: Alphonse was separated from his flesh and blood body for a long time, and when he returned to it, it was severely malnourished and frail. Though he’s had several years to recover, he still sometimes tires easily and requires the aid of a cane or a crutch to walk.
