Character name: Dr. Rodney McKay
Series: Stargate Atlantis
Character history: Can be found here. His canon point is during season 4, specifically after the episode "Trio".
Character personality: The first two words that come to mind when describing Rodney McKay are "insufferable genius". Rodney is incredibly intelligent, being one of the world's leading astrophysicists and an expert on several alien technologies, and this in turn makes him very arrogant. He can be abrasive, condescending, and hard to work with because of this. Rodney has no problem with being dismissive and a downright prick toward his co-workers and underlings, especially if he thinks their ideas are stupid or that they're holding him back. His services are indispensible to the Atlantis team, and he loves to take the opportunity to remind them of this fact. Rodney can also be very competitive with the few people who are his intellectual equal. In addition, he tends to ramble and overexplain his various schemes, ideas, and devices, which often leads to frustration and impatience among his colleagues.
Aside from his massive intelligence isolating him somewhat from others, Rodney has poor social skills in general. He can be awkward and stumble over his words when in non-work settings, especially around women he likes. His competitiveness led to him becoming estranged from the only family he has left- his sister Jeannie- and he was slow to try and repair their relationship. Rodney is also something of a glutton and a hypochondriac, often complaining on long journeys about how hungry he is, claiming he needs to eat a lot due to being hypoglycemic, and worrying that every normal malady he contracts could lead to his death- if he is even truly sick in the first place. After being trapped in a spaceship underwater and nearly drowning, he has developed a phobia of being in tight spaces.
Rodney is a paradox, however- though often seen and presented as weak and cowardly, he does have positive qualities, and his greatest shows of strength come at his moments of greatest weakness. He can be quite vulnerable, gentle and sympathetic when it seems like all hope has been lost, when the team has just overcome a great hurdle, or when one of his friends is feeling down. Rodney has managed to forge strong friendships with the members of his team and has a good rapport with most of the other Atlantis expedition members, in no small part because his genius has saved their lives on more than one occasion. His moments of cowardice are tempered by a willingness to put his life on the line and face down seemingly-impossible tasks. He will never, ever back down when faced with a problem, no matter how insurmountable it seems, and will work past the point of exhaustion to find a solution. Once he and his colleagues get into a groove and start making headway on a problem, he actually works quite well with others and is more open to and accepting of their ideas. Rodney can keep a cool head under pressure and admits himself that his best work comes when he's got an urgent deadline to meet.
Rodney is also immensely loyal to his teammates, considering them to be his family, always does his best to fix his mistakes, and carries a lot of guilt when he faces a problem he can't fix. He will put his neck on the line for them and knows how to stall for time and manipulate their enemies into keeping himself and the others alive until help arrives. He has trouble dealing with loss because he cares about his friends so much, and worries when he believes he is going to die and make them experience the pain of losing him. Though a scientist, he has no hesitation in taking up arms when the need arises, and is capable of defending himself in a fight- or at least holding off the enemy long enough to run away and get help.

Journal entry sample: "So, Dr. McKay, you weren't actually real except now you are and welcome to New Moore." Stop me if you've heard that one before, because I am sure I or one of my colleagues must all have had a similar story fed to us at some point in our lives. That we imagined a big part of our lives. That it was all in our heads. So you'll forgive me if I'm not quite ready to believe this whole thing and expect to wake back up in the infirmary at any moment to be told it was some sort of weird dream caused by an alien fungus or something like that. Hey, it's not completely unheard of!
… Wait, MANDATORY DANCE? This is not my best day...
3rd person sample: The endlessly blinking lights coming from the various computers and instruments in the lab shone over the lone figure slumped over his desk. Rodney wanted nothing more at this point than a nice cup of hot cocoa, a big plate of cookies, maybe a turkey sandwich or three, and his nice soft bed... but if he didn't get this sequencing done, the ZPM would keep malfunctioning, and if the ZPM kept malfunctioning, it would eventually drained, and if it eventually drained, there would be no cloak or no shield...
On and on.
And of course, he was the only one who could fix it. Well, him and Zelenka. Who would be helping if Rodney hadn't so generously offered to keep going at it and let his friend get some rest. Of course he would come to regret that decision. He ALWAYS regretting doing that. Why did he always have to be such a nice guy?
"Alright, nice guy. Time to get back to this sequencing, or it's never going to get done. And then you're just going to be sitting here, talking to yourself, and listening and talking back. Not that you're already not doing that, which is admittedly kinda freaky and... oh, for God's sake. I need some coffee."
