Creating Your Character

The Character Physically

What is the character’s stature and build? Are they overweight or lean? What is their height and weight?
How old are they? - Jennifer's age is never given in canon, but she mentions skipping 3 grades and getting a bachelor's degree before she turned 18, so she is quite young, comparatively speaking, for a doctor. TVTropes claims that she was 26 when she took over as head of Atlantis' medical department, making her 28 by the end of the series.
Describe their posture; is it good? Do they carry themselves well? Are they crooked, straight, or handicapped?
Are they in good shape or out of condition? Are they muscular, weak, or strong? Any special abilities or super powers?
How is their health? Any illnesses or conditions? - Overall, Jennifer is in good health, but it's hinted at in a few episodes (like The Seed) that she suffers from insomnia, especially when she's under stress, and that she takes medication for it.
Are they physically active or sedentary? A fast or slow mover?
Are they clumsy, awkward, or graceful when they move, walk, or run?
Would you describe the character as good looking, pretty, beautiful, average, plain, ugly, disfigured?
How does the character regard their physicality? Are they proud, ashamed?
Describe their complexion and skin. Dark, light, clear, marked, tattooed, branded?
Describe their hair, coloring, styling. Is great care taken in upkeep, or disregarded as a nuisance?
How is their dexterity? Do they have good hands? Can they manipulate and create or repair? Jennifer is a doctor and regularly performs surgery, so her hands are very steady and dextrous.
Is he physically tense or relaxed, nervous, controlled?
What part of their body would you notice first?
How is their eyesight? Wear glasses, blind, going blind? Color? Her eyes are green and she's never shown to have any sort of vision problems.

The Character’s Clothes

How many clothes does this character have? Not very many, since transporting stuff between home and the Pegasus Galaxy is a bit of a chore.
What kinds of items are in their wardrobe? Right now, mostly copies of her Stargate uniforms. On base, she tends to wear a gray jacket with yellow stripes on the shoulders and lower arms with a light blue top underneath, gray pants, and comfortable shoes. The jacket has Velcro patches with the American flag on one sleeve and the Atlantis insignia (featuring the world Atlantis and a pegsus flying through a Stargate chevorn). Offworld, she favors a black leather jacket, a black or blue shirt underneath, and black pants, with the patches on the jacket removed. She also has plenty of hospital scrubs.

Sometimes she'll raid Rodney's closet and wear one of his undershirts, even though they're the same style as some of hers, just because she can.
Do they have favorite articles of clothing? Not really.
What colors are their clothes, is there a wide range? Bright or dull? What are their favorite colors to wear? Again, most of her clothes are gray and black, with the yellow stripes on her on-base uniform signifying that she's in the Medical department. Her hospital scrubs are bluegreen.
Are their clothes old or new? They were new when she started, but they do wear down with age/use, especially her offworld uniform due to harsher conditions.
Were they bought or homemade, hand-me-downs, expensive tailored-made? Her uniforms were most likely tailor-made, but the hospital scrubs are loose-fitting and were probably just bought in her general size range.
Is your character at home in their clothes or uncomfortable?
Does your character care for their clothes, kept up and neat, do they worry about how they look?
Does your character have to dress a certain way because of his job or position? Is it a uniform? If so, do the clothes fit their real, basic character, or are the clothes worn as a symbol or mask?
Do they dress according to a self-image of themselves? Is this self-image conscious or unconscious? At what age was this self-image set, and what circumstances dictated the image?
Discuss adornments, jewelry, or trophies that your character might wear. Are there tattoos, piercing, brandings, or ritualistic scarring, and what were the events, rituals, or circumstances that lead your character to having them.
What kind of underwear does your character wear?

The Character’s Voice

Does your character speak in a high or low pitch?
Are they a loud or soft talker?
Is there a wide range in the voice in volume, pitch, quality, or is the voice consistent and even?
Is there good resonance to the voice? Is the voice throaty, chesty, heady, or nasal?
Is there tension in the voice? Anxiety? Emotion?
Is there an accent? Anything unusual in pronunciation? Emphasis? Phrasing?
Is it a trained voice or just natural? Does the character “try” to speak well or just “however it comes out”? There's a definite distinction between Jennifer's speech when she's talking to someone as a doctor, versus when she's in a casual or combat situation. When speaking as a doctor, she tends to be more formal and speak with a larger vocabulary.
Is the speech clear or muddy? Do they mumble? Are they distinct?
Is the voice comforting or irritating? Reassuring or disturbing? Are they self-conscious when they speak to others? How large a group could they speak to before they become self-conscious?
What is the first thought one might have after hearing your character speak?

The Character’s Mind

Would you describe the character as smart, dumb, or naïve? Jennifer is canonly extremely smart, as she skipped multiple grades in school and generally had an accelerated education due to her intelligence. However, by her own admission, this came at the cost of her social development, and so she can sometimes have trouble navigating social situations and can come off as awkward.
Do they think quickly? Slowly? Are they quick-witted? Dull?
What kind of education do they have? Jennifer moved up 3 grades when she was in grade school, flew through her first few years of university, and attended medical school at an unnamed college in Madison, Wisconsin.
Does the character possess a knowledge or expertise in a particular field?
Is the character impulsive or deliberate in reaching conclusions? Would you describe them as being logical, rational, or emotional?
Do they think things out before they speak or blurt out the first thought?
Do they contemplative times? What occupies their mind when alone?
Would they be considered an idealist? A pragmatist? A dreamer? An idea person? An action person?
Are they motivated chiefly by abstract ideals or practical rewards?
Can your character tell a joke?

The Character’s Emotions and Personality

Is your character an introvert or an extrovert? Jennifer is very much an introvert due to being socially stunted (see below). She was likely extremely shy when she was a little girl, and some of this shyness does carry over into adulthood.
Do they get along well with people? Do they have charm or charisma? Are people naturally attracted to them? Jennifer tends to get along with everyone she interacts with on Atlantis, and they in turn trust her due to her obvious skill as a doctor and general kind nature. However, due to her accelerating in school and missing out on a lot of normal social functions as a teenager, coupled with her never finding a place to belong til she came to Atlantis, there are times she can physically and emotionally withdraw from a group, as though she feels that she and her opinions are not wanted, and is likely afraid of rejection. She also very much feels like she had big shoes to fill after Carson's death, and worries that she will never be as liked and accepted as he was. As times goes on, however, she begins to overcome her hesitation and becomes less afraid to voice her opinions when with the rest of the gang, and is much less hesitant to interact with them on a social level.
Do they have many friends? Any close friends? She considers the main members of the group- that is John, Rodney, Teyla and Ronon- to be her closest friends. Carson gets up there, too, once he comes back as a clone. Jennifer sees Samantha Carter as a bit of a role model, and she sees Mr. Woolsey as a friend, too, even if not a close one.
Would you describe your character as hot-blooded or cool headed? For the most part, Jennifer has a cool head, especially when she's in sickbay or the operating room. However, she can be unsure of herself and skittish when it comes to stepping outside her comfort zone, especially when it comes to situations where she's forced to fight or her life is in danger from enemy attacks.
Do they have a narrow or wide range of emotions? Do they show, or are the emotions concealed? Why?
Do they indulge in emotional peaks, outbursts, or valleys? Often?
Would you describe them as sensitive or callused? Much more sensitive.
Is your character suspicious, cautions, trusting, or oblivious about people or situations?
Are they an aggressive or reactive person? Act or react?
Do they typically take positive or negative action?
In a dangerous or emergency situation, would they go toward the situation or run away?
Is the character basically nervous or calm? Basically calm.
Does the character have a sense of humor? Do they appreciate jokes? Can he see humor in any situation? Can they laugh at themselves?
Do others find them amusing? Are they a practical joker? What do they think about tricks or jokes played on other people?
Is their humor ever cruel? Never.
Are there any conditions that would cause them to be harmful, mean, or cruel to another person? As a doctor, Jennifer took an oath to heal people and has a pretty strong code of medical ethics. That said, she's not above deliberately hurting a person, but was only shown doing so once, it was a non-fatal wound, and that was only because her and Teyla's lives were in danger if she didn't act. Most of the time she shows determination to help sick and injured people, even if that person was or is her enemy, caring more about making them better than her personal relationship with the patient. The only exception to this rule was Golan, the man who sold Teyla's people out to the Wraith scientist Michael, and even then, she mentioned that she was merely tempted to leave him to die, but didn't actually do so.
Are they a loving person? Are they capable of relating to one specific person in a romantic way?
Is the character loved by any other person, in what way?
Is the character romantically in love now? With whom? Is this a happy, rewarding or frustrating situation for them? Yes, towards the end of the series Jennifer began a relationship with her colleague Dr. Rodney McKay, choosing him over her teammate Ronon. Her romance with Rodney is new, but the two of them seem to be happy, despite the fact that his many faults and quirks can grate on her- she bears them with patience, and in turn, he tries to be a better person. Rodney is also very encouraging and makes sure Jennifer knows how brilliant and beautiful he believes she is.

The Character’s Wealth, Power, and Influence.

Does this person have much money? Does it provide position or respect from others for him?
Is your character generous or selfish with their money and possessions?
Is the character socially prominent? Are they prominent from wealth, position, office, family history, ability or accomplishment?
Does the character rate high in the “pecking order” within their own household? Town? Area? Nation? World?
Does this person wield much clout? Over whom and by what means?
Can they command others to do their bidding, by word or manipulation?
How do they get their desires?
To whom are they subservient? Is this submission willing or unavoidable? "Subservient" in the sense that she has bosses. When she first arrived on Atlantis, she was an ordinary doctor/medic underneath Carson Beckett, and seems to have gotten along with him fairly well. Carson's boss was Elizabeth Weir; whether Elizabeth chose Jennifer for her position or Jennifer volunteered herself for it is unclear, but she seemed comfortable discussing her fears with Elizabeth. Her next boss was Colonel Samantha Carter, whom Jennifer admired and looked up to. Sam seems to have helped Jennifer feel more like part of the group and work through her insecurities. Her current boss is Richard Woolsey; she is never shown interacting with him all that much, but she seems perfectly happy to follow his instructions and is amicable with him.

The Character’s Activities

How does the character spend their time?
What does their daily routine consist of?
What is their profession or work? Jennifer is a doctor- specifically, she's head of the medical department on the city of Atlantis. Technically, she's employed by the U.S. military, but Atlantis doesn't have many direct dealings with them, instead being overseen by an organization called the IOA. Her speciality was never mentioned in canon, but she seems to have been recruited fresh out of med school and is more of a general practitioner or a surgeon.
What things do they really like to do?
What things do they hate to do?
What are their leisure time activities? Pastimes? Recreation? Jennifer's not seen having leisure time very often, but she does enjoy going on goodwill missions to other planets to help people who don't have regular access to a doctor. She also enjoys spending time with her friends and teammates.
Do they play games? What kind? She's never seen doing so.
Do they like to eat or drink? Does this figure largely in their lives? How important is it? Jennifer is never seen eating for pleasure, just for sustenance, and seems to try to at least eat healthy things.
How important is sex to them? What sexual activities do they partake in? Anything unusual or what you would consider deviant? Not much of Jennifer's sex life was ever shown, but the first time she and Rodney have it, it was at her suggestion and in the back of an airplane. It's easy to infer that, because she and Rodney are both very busy people, it's difficult for them to find much time for slow, passionate sex, much less a private place to have it in when there are so many people on Atlantis, so they take whatever moments they get to be intimate.
Is sex a rewarding, enriching area of this person’s life or is it frightening, anxious, or frustrating? Is sex a positive or negative factor in their life? Positive; it's only frustrating because of the aforementioned lack of time and privacy.

Character’s Fears

What things frighten your character? In the episode "Doppelganger", Jennifer is shown to have a fear of parasites, spurned on by a fellow student in med school hiding a snake inside a cadaver as a joke after she mentioned that the chestburster in the movie "Alien" scared her. She even has a nightmare about a parasite being caught inside Teyla's body because of it. Jennifer is also scared of something happening to her, because of what it might do to her father, as she is the only family he has left.
