BACKGROUND: Wiki link.

Richard Castle is one of the main characters of the series, and as such, he is heavily involved in its events. The basic premise of the series Castle is that Castle himself, a famous mystery novelist, has secured an arrangement with the New York City police department to consult on murder cases and help the homicide detectives solve them. He primarily works with Detective Kate Beckett, who starts off disliking and resenting his presence, but the two of them gradually fall in love, begin a relationship, and get engaged. He also becomes close friends with Kate's partners, Detectives Kevin Ryan and Javier Esposito, and is sometimes seen working independently with them. Kate's mother was murdered before the series began; the case was never solved and was mentally packed away by Beckett, but Castle begins looking into it himself and re-opens the case. This mystery stays in the background and gradually unfolds, and Castle helps Kate put the clues together at every step of the way.

Castle's home life is also often center stage, those storylines sometimes intertwining with the murder cases. Castle lives with his mother, Martha (an actress who's always on the lookout for her next role) and his smart, savvy daughter Alexis, whom he raised as a single father. The two of them embrace Kate's role in his life and almost immediately treat her like a member of the family; Castle also often uses Alexis and Martha as sounding boards about cases he is working on, and more than once, the two of them have said something that's given him inspiration.

Castle is, first and foremost, a novelist in profession, so he's occasionally seen working on his next book, as well as going on book tours, attending signings, and giving readings, though this aspect of his life is shown less and less as the series goes on. As the series begins, he's just killed off his most famous character, Derrick Storm; meating Kate Beckett inspires him to write a new series about a female detective named Nikki Heat. Researching his books has also given Castle a number of contacts on both sides of the law, which he's not afraid to utilize.

PERSONALITY: The first words that come to mind when describing Richard Castle at the start of the series are "playboy", "childish", "annoying" and "charming". He is a highly-successful crime novelist and, before the series begins, seems to spend a lot of time fraternizing with his fans, attending book launch parties and readings, and generally living a lavish lifestyle. Castle has a firm belief that everyone and everything has a story- you just have to find it- and is not above hounding or charming people to get their personal stories and thus fresh inspiration for his writing.

However, underneath the ditzy playboy surface, Castle is a very intelligent man who has great insight into the criminal mind, and thoroughly researches his novels. If he doesn't know something himself, chances are he has a source or some old research that contains the answers, having built up quite an impressive amount of contacts over the years, even some in the FBI and CIA. The reasons for his fascination with crime and murder have yet to be revealed, but there are some implications that some tragedy in his past drove Castle to specifically turn his focus on murder mysteries.

No matter what the reasons are, however, Castle obviously loves the chance to live the adventures and excitement he writes about as a consultant for the NYPD, for he is a fanboy in his own right. He is shown to have a very large collection of books in his office, is very savvy about the various tropes and cliches shown in movies and television shows (and how they sometimes apply to real life), and is known to have a collection of rare comic books, as well as having a fairly deep knowledge of various characters within them.

Castle starts off thinking and acting quite selfishly, though this greatly diminishes with time. When he first begins to work with the NYPD, he tends to treat everything as one big joke, and often acts as though cases will play out the way they do in fiction, forming opinions about a given crime based on what he would write, rather than the facts. He also stays emotionally detached from the cases, but as time goes on, finds himself becoming more and more involved and toning down his attitude, treating the victims and suspects with more respect and care. One negative trait he keeps throughout the series, however, is a tendency to act without much regard for others, and an inability to understand why people are upset with him until it's explicitly explained to him. He also doesn't quite give up his tendency to come up with outlandish theories, though he reasons that if he keeps making off-the-wall guesses, he will eventually be right.

Castle also lives to be a thorn in Detective Beckett's side. He can easily get her riled up and get under her skin by virtue of being his own annoying self... yet somehow, this strange bond eventually evolves into one of strong mutual trust and respect along with the teasing. The two have an obvious romantic and sexual attraction to one another for much of the series, but are unwilling or unable to resolve those feelings for quite a long time. Even after they officially become a couple, he loves to continue pulling her pigtails, especially outside the bedroom and on the case. His ability to annoy her can be a boon, as well, because Castle often says something that makes Beckett think outside the box and reach past her own solid conclusions. His nagging feelings or insistence that something is wrong because he wouldn't write it that way have cracked some tough cases wide open and even saved innocent suspects from being convicted. Both he and Kate trust one another with their lives and darkest secrets and fears and have literally faced down death together.

Despite his negative attributes, Castle does have positive qualities. He is more than willing to apologize to people he's upset once he understands why and is not too proud to admit when he's wrong. He dotes on his daughter, Alexis, is constantly on the lookout for her well-being, and does his best to be a great dad without spoiling her- having grown up not knowing who his father is and with a mother who constantly left him with nannies while she pursued her acting career, Castle wants Alexis to always feel that she is loved and know that he will be there for her. The two share a very close bond, and while Castle sometimes fumbles and is overprotective of her, he trusts her and she him. It is his worst nightmare as a parent to imagine something bad happening to her, and so cases involving children in danger affect him deeply. Castle has a good relationship with his mother, too, despite his upbringing and the fact that she often gets on his nerves, and it is obvious the two love each other.

Once Castle befriends someone, especially as closely as he does Beckett, he will go out of his way and give whatever he can to make sure they're happy, and can be very generous with his wealth. When he and Beckett become a couple, he is very attentive to her and lavishes attention and affection on her, always ready with a bottle of wine and dinner when she's had a hard day. When they are separated, he makes sure to call her as often as possible. However, he is also smart about keeping their work life professional, and finds more subtle ways to continue showing her how much he adores her when they're on the clock.

POWER: Castle doesn't have any supernatural or superheroic powers in canon. I have proposed the following for him to have in the game:

Paper and ink manipulation: Exactly what it says- Castle could manuver ink and paper at will, though not with enough fine control to actually, say, write a story upon the page. However, he could utilize this ability to throw ink around to slip up or blind an opponent, discreetly read documents without getting fingerprints on them by lifting them up, etc. His ability to move objects would be limited to paper and ink only.

Item creation: Castle would have the ability to write down any object he wants and will it to temporarily appear. He will have to practice this skill before being able to keep anything around longer than 30 seconds or so, however- and it would require focus and concentration to summon anything large and keep it around. The largest thing he would be able to summon would be the size of a car, though I am also happy to place a smaller size restriction on this power if requested.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE: [Video]

[Someone's obviously showing off when the feed turns on- there's a book open in front of the camera, with the pages flipping of their own volition. A pad of post-its then attaches itself to the book, before Castle turns the camera on his own face.]

Now, on the scale of awesome to not so much, I guess manipulating ink and paper isn't close to the cool end. Still, it allows the ultimate in laziness when reading a book- I don't even have to turn the page! And for someone who reads as much as I do... the possibilities are endless. Why, I might even go back to the old stylus-and-inkwell method of writing. Really connect to my predecessors.

Now, that aside, I do have another power. [Castle holds the phone up so that he can clearly be seen writing "WAFFLES" in a notebook. And lo and behold... a plate of waffles appears. However, they're still frozen and rather small.] I can make anything I want. I'm just not very good at it so far, apparently.

Tell me about your powers, Heropa. And hey, if you know anybody willing to help an unfortunate writer who's a little out of his element, you'd have my eternal gratitude and a dedication in my next novel.
